Research: Narrative theories

Todorov establish 5 structure for narrative:

1. Equilibrium: has to be carefully shown - the setting is established, key character (s) are introduced and the story line is set up.
2. Disruption: oppositional character(s)appear and the story takes particular direction
3. Recognition: of the disruption - the lives of characters and events are interwoven. Tension builds throughout this section, which is often the longest.
4. Attempt to repair: the damaged caused by the disruption - the highest point of tension after which there is a change in dynamic
5. New equilibrium: achieved/ Reinstatement of equilibrium - matters are sorted out, problems are solved and questions answered.

For example,in the story Cinderella the key characters are established, Cinderella is a girl working for her step mum. Then the disruption happens when the fairy god mother gets a dress for her to go to the ball. The recognition takes place when she is dancing and it hit 12 because she is suppose to be home. The attempt to repair is she is running to get home and leaves behind a slipper however the new equilibrium is when the prince starts to search for her and finds out that she is the princess because the slipper fits her.

This video talks about Todorovs theory and helps to understand it :)

Research: Convention of thriller

Down below are a list of thriller conventions that I conducted in order to broaden my understanding.

1. The narrative centres around a crime e.g. theft or a murder
2. The protagonist is fallible and has an 'Achilles heel' tat is exploited by the antagonist. The title of the thriller may relate to this weakness e.g. Vertigo and Insomnia.
3. The protagonist will be seen 'in peril' in one or more scenes before the resolution.
4. The antagonist ensnares the protagonist in an increasingly complex web, until the protagonist feels isolated and helpless.
5. Micro-elements combine in a build up of suspense.
6. Themes of identity are common: mistaken identity, doubling/doppelgangers, amnesia.
7. Themes of seeing, reflection and mirroring. Manipulation of perspectives and optical illusion are common.
8. The audience of a thriller is placed in the ambiguous position of voyeur
9. Voyeurism can also be a theme and a objectification of female characters is common especially in earlier thrillers
10. A series of one important enigma(s) are/is set up in the opening sequence of the film, is further complicated during the first part of the film and only resolved at the very end.

Genre: Film Conventions - NICCS

To understand genre film conventions we analysed a trailer of a movie called "los Angeles". This enabled me to understand the film conventions deeper. It is made up of 5 elements this is knows as:

Narrative: Typical story lines and structure used
Iconography: Things we expect to see
Characters: Typical character who drive the story forward
Camera work: Typical cinematographic style
Setting: Typical locations used

This broadened my understanding of Genre film conventions.

Thriller sub genres (Derry's sub genres)

Derry defines the suspence thriller as "a crime work which presents a generally murderous antagonism in which the protagonist becomes either an innocent victim or a nonprofessional criminal within a structure that is significantly unmediated by a traditional figure of detection" He came up with a way to systemirize thriller films.

He identifies 6 major sub-types:

1. The thriller of murderous passion:
This is based around a triangular grouping of a wife, lover, or husband. The movie is based upon the murder commited by one or two of the people from the triangle towards one member from the triangle. The criminal motive is usually due to greed or passion however, the movie is mostly focused on the criminal protagonist. Furthermore, an example a movie that consist this is "Niagara" directed by Henry Hathaway (1953).

2. The political thriller: Organised a plot to kill whereby they contain FBI and agencies

3. The thriller of acquired identity
This movie is based upon a protagonist acquisition of an unfirmilar identity. It is organised by the protagonist. The character is given an identity which is not his but it is coming back to catch him from the past.

4. The psychosomatic thriller
The movie is centered around a psychotic effects of a trauma due to the protagonist current involvement in crime and a love affair. The protagonist is always portrayed as the victim. Therefore, it is organised around a phychotic effect of trauma, whereby a victim is suffering. It may contain a love affair whereby something happens to change the relationship. An example of this type of thriller wouldd be "Vertigo".

5. The thriller of moral confrontation
This focuses on characters where one character represents good and innocence another represent evil. The movie usually elaborate qualities which emphasize between the parallels between the victim and the criminal. An example of this type of thriller movie would be "Blue velvet".

6. The innocent on the run thriller.
This is based upon a an innocent victim, who is on the run either from villians or the police or both, he has coincidentally entered into the "dark" side where by it is not part of his usual life routine. The protagonist is the victim who is wrongly accused of killing his wife an example of this thriller movie is "The fugitive".

Having Derry catergorize these thrillers can be very helpful however, there are problems associated with his theory because now days modern suspense thriller usually consist of hybrids and are constantly changing and evolving at the same time.

Research: Juno Re-creation

For this task we had to re-create the Juno video, therefore the teacher firstly showed us the original Juno video. We took into consideration of all the shots within this opening, and therefore, produced a story board. I took into account all of the camera shots that was used when making my story board for example, the first shot is a long shot (tracking) then a medium to long shot behind the character.

My storyboard represents each shot:

Here is a list of some of the types of camera shots/angles we conducted from the video and our storyboard.

1. Long shot (tracking)
2. Medium to long shot from behind the female actor
3. Close-up to female actors shoes
4. Medium shot of the female actor walking (legs)
5. Long shot (Female actor walking towards camera)
6. Medium shot of female actor
7. Medium shot of female actor walking (legs)
8. Medium shot of female actors upper body
9. Medium shot high angle of female actor walking away from camera
10. Long shot female actor walking towards the camera (Match on action with shot 9)
11. Long shot from female actors left leaving the frame
12. Point of view shot of the female actor looking down at her shoes.

To recreate our Juno video the first thing we took into consideration is who the main character will be. We decided that our main character would be female in order to make the film look realistic and original like the Juno video.

The story board enabled us to remember what each shot would look like and what type of camera angle/shot it would be for example shot 8 looks like a medium shot of the female actors upper body therefore, the storyboard was like a plan to guide us when recreating the Juno video. Moreover, it enabled us to see exactly where each shot would take place and in what order. Furthermore, to make the recreation original we inputted the original non diegetic sound track (All i want is you by Barry Louis Polisar) into our video. Also, one of the things we took into consideration was the credits. I wrote down the timing of each credit to make the recreation looks original and realistic for example:

0:15 - FOX SEARCHLIGHT PICTURE presents
0:20 - A MANDATE PICTURES/MR MUD PRODUCTION
0:26 - A JASON REITMAN FILM
0:28 - JUNO
0:37 - ELLEN PAGE
0:42 - MICHEAL SARA
0:46 - JENIFER GARNER
0:54 - JASON BATEMAN
1:00 - ALLISON JANNET

This task gave me a deeper understanding as to when and what times credits are represented. Also we decided to use a bottle as our prompt to make the movie original. I however, decided to challenger some of the creditors effects by adding effects when the credits are shown. I did this to challenge the original video. To conclude, i believe that my skills on Final Cut Express are improving for example, during my preliminary task i was unaware how to add audio however, now i am aware. Also, i learnt how to use a new program "Live type". This enabled me to write my credits by adding effect. However, if i had a chance to do this task again one thing i would improve on is the costumes. To make the video more original i would dress the exact same way as the character in Juno is represented.

Preliminary: Peer Assessment

I decided to evaluate Aymens  preliminary task.. Aymens preliminary video  illustrates that his group met the criteria s that was required, for example, match on action, and shot reverse shot. One thing that really impressed me which I could have included in my preliminary is the sound. The use of sound enabled the audience to feel worried, for example, at the beginning the character in a red shirt, says "im gonna get him", and the music slowly comes starts. The builds suspense and makes the audience want to watch what happens next. However, if  Aymen's video had no sound, the audiences would not feel as engaged.

One thing Aymen's group did not focus on is the lighting, lighting is very important. When the character in red is talking to "Aymen"  the lighting is very. therefore his group could have added some light. The would have enabled the audience to identify how Aymen feels through his facial expressions, therefore, engaging the audience by making them view the characters perspective.

Furthermore, in order to make any further improvements I would suggest they could have improved one editing by adding some effects. For example, fade in and out, dissolve, and blur. This would make the video more engaging, however to conclude overall, i strongly think that the video was very good. The used there skills very wisely, there are some bits that can be improved but because the criteria was met, its was very good and exciting.

By doing a peer assessment it has enabled me to see what i can improve on my preliminary task on for example, focus on the sound and adding effects and what I have done well. Also, it give me a deeper understanding the importance of shot list and script.

Preliminary: Camera shot requirements

There was a specific structure that I had to maintain including specific camera shot requirements, for example, we had to include a conversation at one point and someone crossing the room.  Also, in terms of camera shot; the preliminary had to consist:

Match on action
Continuity shot
Reverse shot

In order for me to achieve this, my teacher explained each shot to me by using examples from different films. This was beneficial because it gave me a deeper understanding of camera shots, for example, I could identify each camera shot on my own.

I decided to portray my understanding of camera shots to the examiners and teachers by giving a definition of 'Match on action' and 'Reverse shot' in my own terminology.

Match on action: When you edit cuts from one shot to another view that matches the first shot's action. Although the two shots may have been shot hours apart from one anoths, cutting on the actions enables contentiousness and prevents the audience from realizing that they may have been shot from two different times.

Reverse shot: One character is shown looking at another character (often off-screen), and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character

Preliminary: Evaluation with screen grabs of required components

Discuss how your group came up with the idea for the script. How efficient was the discussion? What key decisions were made? Embed your script.

In order to produce a script we firstly did a brain storm of all the different types of ideas the preliminary task could consist. We then came to an agreement of what ideas we all thought was most suitable. However, we had a specific structure that we had to follow, for example, the clip had to include a conversation, and in terms of camera shots, it had to contain: match on action - continuity, shot, reverse shot and someone crossing the room. Furthermore, having identified what the story of this task would be, we decided to produce the script and then a story board, displaying what each camera angle would look like.

Having produced my preliminary task I strongly believe I have gained a deeper understanding in terms of camera shots for example, I now know what 'tracking' means.and I understand its importance for example, it enables the audience to be in the characters perspective. Moreover, everyone contributed by giving ideas for the script for example,

I came up with the idea that Mathura should say "that is geerthy". The behind this was because I wanted to introduce the characters from Mathuras perspective. Producing the script was very easy as we had our main key idea that focused on two girl arguing. If i had to re-do the script again, It would include a longer conversation at the beginning. I felt that the conversation for the script at the beginning had been rushed and as a result did not start of grasping the audience attention. Some of the key decision that we made was that we would focus on two girls arguing. At the beginning we found it hard to choose a specific idea, however, we then chose the idea that we felt was best fit for this criteria and as a result of working in a girl group we believed that two girls arguing was the best idea to choose. The script was written slightly quick but we had to cut some idea's down as it did not always make sense.

Coming up with the story board was very straight forward as we had our script ready. We had to adjust the script to our storyboard. The story board enabled me to understand how to take the camera shots during what each character says. I found that the script enabled me to find the right camera shots for the story board. The image on the bottom portrays my story board. It shows how the story takes place from one shot to another. If i had to redo my storyboard one thing i would change is make the story board image more clearer. This would enable me to not have any misunderstandings of the images. In conlcusion i beleive that drawing a story board was very effective because it made me understand my story more, know what camera shots to take, when and where.

The shooting was not running smoothly. I bleieve that one of the hardest task for this preliminary task was the shooting. Although we had a story board and script the storyboard images was very hard to see as it was extremly messy. Moreover, one of the tricky shooting we did was tracking. I believe that tracking was tricky because firstly Mathura had to take a low angle shot behind me whilst i was walking. The camera for this shot was very shaking. Therefore, i beleive if i had to do shoots again one thing i would take into consideration is use a tripod. this will reduce the amount the camera is shaking.

The key elements from the brief:
Have a conversation: This was planned without enough thought therefore, the conversation ended up being very quick. If I could do this exercise again I would spend more time on planning a good conversation.
Match on action: I believe my group handled the match on action very well because we showed it through the use of our camera skills, however if we were to do this task again I would make sure the camera was not constantly shaking.
Continuity: This shots were done when the girl walked through the corridle, I believe I edited these shots well which made them flow efficently therefore, I was very pleased because it enabled my video to make sense and not jump from one shot to another which I had done previously. One of the shots we used was tracking, this enabled to position the audience in the characters shoes.
Reverse shot: I believe my reverse shot was very good, the reason behind is because of the technique we used; over the shoulder shot. This enabled our reverse shot to work effectively when the camera went from one person to another. However, during this shots I made a lot of mistakes for example, the first shot was taken from a low angle, therefore we decided to change it to and use our skills to make it more suitable and realistic.

During the course of this production I learnt a range of things for example, I learnt the significant of continuity. I realized having continuity helps makes the video make sense and prevents the audience from getting confused on whats happening in the video. Moreover, I learnt how to create a match on action shot. I also, learnt how to add effects on Final cut (when Theeba is in the mirror) This grabs the audience attention as it's something unusual. Furthermore I learnt how to edit shots to make them flow, which made my audience understand what is happening in the video. If i had to do this task again one thing i would want to learn more about is effects. I believe that i did not broaden any skills on effects therefore, the preliminary task is not as interesting. Furthermore, i would also improve my understanding and knowledge of Final Cut Express. I believe that i learnt how to edit some shots but i did not do anything extra ordinary for example, add some music. Therefore, i hope to be able to achieve this by the end of AS media studies.

The images below is a screen grab of the required criteria and represents the program I have used and evidence about what i learnt. Also, it shows my understanding and knowledge.

Preliminary: Shot list

This image above represents a shot list for my preliminary task. The shot list enables me to identify where the camera will be situated and at what angle.
An example would be, shot 1 illustrates that when 'M' and 'K' are talking, the camera shot will be a mediums shot however, changes to a over the shoulder shot. Another example would be, when 'G' walks past, the camera pans. Therefore, by having a shot list, it makes videoing very easy and quick as I already know how each shot will be taken.

In order to write our script and shot list it was necessary for me to understand some camera angles for example, low angle. Therefore, the teacher decided to give us examples of camera shots through T.V. programs and images. I found this very useful because once the activity had finished I could analyse exactly what camera shot it was. Moreover, one thing I learnt during that activity is; each shot establishes what the director wants us to see. (his perspective).

To conclude, if I had to re-do this shot list again, one thing I would make sure I improve on is making the shots very clear, this will neglect any misunderstanding. Also, I am going to start reading more media terms; as a results, this will enable me to broaden my knowledge about camera angles and its significance. Furthermore, one aspect I strongly believe I did well in is achieving the criteria whereby I had to include: reverse shot and match on action. Having done this task, I can now identify the importance of having a shot list, for example, if I did not have a shot list for the preliminary task, I would be completely lost as to how each shot would be captured.

Preliminary: Script

This image illustrates what each character says and does at each camera shot, for example,
'M' and 'K' - conversation, 'G' walks past - illustrates what each character is doing
"Is that her?" - demonstrates what each character says
"Yeah"

The script enables the characters to know exactly what to say during filming therefore, the script is plays a very significant role. Also, the script enables the characters to be prepared when being on stage
As you can see in the image above, we wrote 'M' and 'K' for our script instead of the actual characters names, the reason for this was to make the whole process quick. I decided to do a bit of research as to why scripts are important to understand other peoples perspective I learnt that most successful films contain  strong script. To conclude if I had to do this task again, I would improve the detail within the script, One thing I believe I did well in is, make it understandable for people to read.
